SmartCards are a secure memory safe for confidential data like:

• Confidential Informations like bank accounts etc.
• Private Keys
• Private confidential informations like medical data.

As a self-contained mini-computer, the smart card is securely protected against risks of the host. That is extremely inportant for certain applications like:

Generating digital signatures:

• Management of electronic values

SmartCard is based on Standards

Smart cards have become a standard technology with high acceptability, and dissemination. Bank cards, employee badges, ticket systems, door opening systems and much more are build on smart card technology.

SmartCards and PKI

In the context of Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) projects, the smart card is the medium that stores the secrets and private keys. In these projects secure identification, authentication and authorization ist guaranteed to the owner.

To use smart cards with a PC, you need to have a card reader which can be connected. The smart card reader acts as an interface between smart card and host system
